The GYROTONIC® method was created by Juliu Horvath. Juliu was a principal dancer with the Romanian Ballet Company before moving to New York in the 1970's. He then danced with the New York City Opera and later became a principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. While with the Houston Ballet, Juliu suffered a ruptured achilles tendon that immediately interfered with his dance career. He then started practicing yoga and meditation. At this time, Juliu moved to St. Thomas Island and built a hut in the mountains. During his time on the island, Juliu studied his movement and healing process minutely for six years. This is how he came up with his own movement method which he originally named "Yoga for Dancers". After teaching mostly professional dancers, Juliu adapted the system to be suitable for anyone at any age. This format is now called the GYROKINESIS® Method. It was then that Juliu began to build the unique machines that are the basis of The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® method.
